Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)

Más pulida que su predecesora en todo sentido. Es increíble lo que quince años pueden hacerle a la animación. La apuesta es más arriesgada, hay más personajes y arcos cautivadores, el ritmo te engancha y el arte es simplemente precioso. Amoamoamo.

ENG: LEILA MY BELOVED

More refined than its predecessor in every way. It's amazing what 15 years can do to animation. The stakes are higher, there are more characters and arcs to be captivated by, the pacing is enthralling and the art is just delightful. Lovelovelove it.

Perfect Days (2023)

ESP: Hermoso estudio de personaje de alguien que podríamos ver dos segundos en la calle sin pensar mucho en él. Es un retrato de un momento en la sencilla y muy silenciosa vida del protagonista sin mucho contexto de qué pasó antes o qué pasará después. La música es importantísima y habla por Hirayama la mayoría de las veces, así como los cuentos que lee y la cinematografía en sus sueños. Verdaderamente única en su tipo.

También super contenta con el cameo de Tamae Ando, la adoré en Midnight Diner.

ENG: Beautiful character study of someone we could see for a second in the street at any given time and not think much of them. It's a fragment in a specific time of the protagonist's simple and very quiet life without much context as to what happened before or what will happen later. The soundtrack is crucial and speaks for Hirayama most of the time, as the books he reads and the cinematography in his dreams. Truly one of a kind.

Also super hyped with the Tamae Ando cameo, loved her in Midnight Diner.

Fucking Åmål (1998)

ESP: No estoy segura si es un dogma95 pero está hecho como uno y a veces ciertos silencios incómodos con los zoom y movimientos de cámara resultan accidentalmente graciosos. Fuera de eso es un bello vistazo al infierno universal que es vivir en un pueblo chico siendo: a) diferente y b) vista por todos. Estoy muy de acuerdo con la reseña que dice que es un error garrafal cambiarle el título porque es fundamental para la historia. Es una peli optimista y quizá no tan arriesgada como pudo haber sido con el tema en cuestión y la época en la que está hecha pero no todo puede ser amargura.

ENG: I'm not sure it it's a dogma95 but it's made like one and sometimes, certain awkward silences with the zoom and camera movement result unintentionally funny. Apart from that it's a beautiful look at the universal dread of living in a small town being: a) different and b) constantly seen by everone. I very much agree with the review that says it's a mistake to change the title because it's crucial for the story. It's an optimistic movie and maybe doesn't take as many risks as it could've with the themes at ahnd and the time it was made in but not everything should be sad or bitter.

All Shall be Well (2024)

ESP: Es extremadamente punzante iniciar con la cotidianidad de Angie y Pat, pero es una excelente representación de la muerte. Viene súbitamente y sin esperar un segundo más. La temática de qué hacemos con los deseos de los difuntos es una que quiero ver aún más explorada en el cine. Aquellos que se fueron ya no tienen voz, y sólo podemos hacer una conjetura de qué dirían ante determinada situación. Muchos van a aprovecharse de sus vínculos de sangre con ellos para imponer sus propias opiniones, y ese es el eje central de esta peli. El sufrimiento y la frustración de Angie se sienten a flor de piel. Hay muchas tomas preciosas, visualmente es un museo.

ENG: It's specially heartbreaking to start with the mundane in Angie and Pat's life together, but it's an excellent representation of death. It comes suddenly and without holding on a single second. The theme of what we do with the desires of the dead is one that I want to see explored even more in cinema. Those who are gone no longer have a voice, and we can only make up what they would say on any given situation. Many are going to take advantage of they blood links with them to impose their own opinions, and that is the main conflict in thos film. Angie's suggering and frustration are felt thoroughly. There are lots of delightful shots; visually, it's a museum.

Somewhere on Earth (2001)

ESP: Confusa pero hipnótica. Es fácil perderse en algunos puntos pero al final (casi) todo tendrá sentido. Es una historia sobre no encontrar tu lugar en el mundo contada de una forma tan peculiar que sólo puedo describir su vibra como "un sábado lluvioso a las 3 de la tarde perpetuo."

ENG: Confusing but hypnotic. It's easy to get lost at some points but in the end (almost) everything will make sense. It's a story about not finding your place in the world told in such a particular way that I can only describe its vibe as "a perpetual rainy Saturday at 3 PM."

Tokyo Godfathers (2003)

ESP: Qué AVENTURA. Gente imperfecta tratando de hacer lo que creen mejor para una vida vulnerable en brazos. Nunca sabés a dónde te va a llevar esta historia y recomiendo verla sin saber absolutamente nada antes. Divertida, emotiva, emocionante, te hace reír y llorar y todo lo demás. Andá. Mirala."

ENG: What an ADVENTURE. Imperfect people trying to do what they believe is the best for a vulnerable life in their arms. You never know where this story is going to take you and I recommend going into it fully blind. Fun, emotional, exciting, makes you laugh and cry and everything else. Go. Watch it.

Dumplings (2004)

ESP: ¿Un remake hecho por acá sería con empanadas de feto?

Verdaderamente inquietante y el diseño sonoro se roba el show. En especial la yuxtaposición entre música china tradicional y lo grotesco que sucede en pantalla. Representa el sufrimiento femenino en múltiples ámbitos de una forma tan visceral y siniestra que no necesita un gore muy extremo. Incluso el diálogo es suficiente para dar escalofríos. No soy del terror pero no puedo evitar recomendarla. Es el nivel justo de inquietante y temáticamente valiosa para mí.

ENG: A remake done around here would feature fetus empanadas?

Truly unsettling and the sound design steals the show. Specially the juxtaposition between traditional Chinese music and the grotesque happenings on screen. It represents female suffering in several scopes in a way so visceral and sinister that it doesn't need that much gore. Even the dialogue is enough to send some shivers. I'm not too into horror but I can't not recommend it. It's the right level of unsettling and thematically worthy for me.

Los Tonos Mayores (2023)

ESP: Por fin. Aborda cosas muy específicas que me hacen/dan gracia. Una estación de números del Conet Project, un tachero forro, un padre viudo con abrigo corderito haciendo lo mejor que puede, la gente dándole a Ana dos años menos, Uruguay mencionado, los abrigos de Ana y Lepa complementándose en color. Dan muchas ganas de saber qué pasaba en la mente del mozo durante el clímax.

Muy encantadora y hay ciertas influencias notables (¿Una placa de un accidente de la infancia que puede recibir señales las cuales son percibidas por su dueña? Deja vu!) Me voy dando cuenta de lo difícil que debe ser escribir un personaje de esa edad pero Ana se siente muy real en sus acciones. Es avivada y se maneja sola, pero no deja de ser una piba de 14 años con los límites que eso conlleva. Es claramente un proyecto hecho con mucho amor, no podría elegir mejor peli para empezar el año.

ENG: At last. It features very specific things that tickle my fancy. A Conet Project numbers station, an asshole taxi driver, a widowed father with a distinctive jacket doing what he can, people guessing Ana's age as two years younger than she is/was, Uruguay mentioned, Ana and Lepa's jackets being color-complimentary of each other's. You really wonder what was going through the waiter's mind during the climax.

Very charming and there are certain noticeable influences (A plate from a childhood accident that can receive signals which are perceived by its owner? Deja vu!) I'm just realizing how hard it can be to write a character of that age but Ana feels real in her actions. She's smart and can handle herself but is still a 14 year old girl with inherent limits. It's clearly a project made with love, I couldn't have picked a better movie to start the year.

Die Puppe (1919)

ESP: Normalicemos decir "¡Tú, hiena de la lujuria!" en vez de "pajero" o algo así.

Los límites realmente inspiran la creatividad, ¿Eh? Hay unos efectos sobre el rollo bastante potentes para la época y a la vez unos elementos prácticos graciosísimos (Tienen que ver lo que son los caballos en esta peli) pero creo que es parte del chiste. Esta es una caja de juguetes; todo es utilería plasticosa y la susodicha muñeca no es la única en su tipo. Ossi Oswalda sí lo es; preciosa, pícara y excelente. Realmente todos los actores la rompen en sus roles. Me puso de buen humor en un día bastante pesado. Buena crítica a los codiciosos y privilegiados integrantes del clero quienes juntaban toda la comida en una época tan complicada.

ENG: Let's normalize saying "Oh, you hyena of lust!" instead of "gooner" or something like that.

Limitations really do inspire creativity, huh? There are some effects on the film which are pretty strong for the time and simultaneously some truly hilarious practical elements (You have to see what horses look like in this movie) but I think that's part of the joke. This is a dollhouse; it's all plasticky props and the aforementioned doll is not the only one of its kind. Ossi Oswalda is, though; gorgeous, picaresque and just excellent. In truth, every actor just shined in their roles. Got me in a good mood after a hard day. Good criticism of the greedy and privileged members of the clergy who hoarded all the food during such trying times.
