Bread of Happiness (2012)
ESP: Si viste la serie Midnight Diner en Netflix (O sus películas) encontrarás esta historia familiar, sólo que con un enfoque en la vida rural más que la urbana. O, si ya viste esta película y querés más de este concepto, Midnight Diner es tu solución. Dos horas de apreciar la belleza de lo mundano y darse cuenta de que todavía hay tiempo para volver a conectarse con la gente que te rodea. Hermosos paisajes capturados con cinematografía precisa y eficaz, nada muy loco. Y hay una oveja muy tierna.
ENG: If you watched a show like Midnight Diner (or its movies) you'll find familiarity with this story, if only with a focus on rural life rather than urban life. Or, if you watched this movie and want more of this concept, Midnight Diner is the way to go. Two hours of appreciating the beauty in the mundane and realizing that there is still time to reconnect with the people surrounding you. Beautiful scenery captured with precise and technically sound cinematography, nothing too out there. And a cute sheep.
I am what I am (2022)
ESP: Hay unas cuantas escenas memorables que capturan el estrés que una persona asexual arromántica puede enfrentar con cautivante realismo. El deseo de tener una amistad cuando la otra persona tiene intenciones distintas, las expectativas de la sociedad al respecto del matrimonio y el éxito en la vida; pero lo mejor del comentario en esta película es la versión de Cenicienta que crea Kasumi y lo diferente que reaccionan niños y adultos a ella. No se siente sermoneante, es una peli simple y mundana pero a la vez dice mucho entre líneas. Amé la cinematografía también.
ENG: There are a lot of memorable scenes that capture the struggle of an aromantic asexual person with striking realism. The longing for friendship when the other person has other intentions, society's expectations towards marriage as the realization of life; but the peak of commentary in this movie is Kasumi's retelling of Cinderella and how differently kids and adults reacted to it. It doesn't feel preachy, it's simple and low-stakes but simultaneously says a lot between lines. I loved the cinematography too.

It (1927)
ESP: Trato de concentrarme en el hecho de que hubo mucha gente involucrada en hacer de esta película un encanto, de los actores al equipo técnico pero todos hablan de la gran estrella y es imposible no prestarle más atención. Clara Bow se siente tan de la época pero simultáneamente parece una frescura de la época moderna con sus miradas atrapantes y gestos inolvidables. Se siente atemporal.
ENG: I try to keep my mind on the fact that there's so many people responsible for making this film as charming as it is, from the actors to the crew but everyone's talking about the big star and it's impossible not to pay attention to her the most. Clara Bow feels so from the era but at the same time fresh out of the modern age with striking looks and unforgettable gestures. She feels timeless.
All about Eve (1950)
ESP: De a momentos es una fascinante cápsula del tiempo sobre la dinámica que había entre el mundo del teatro y el mundo del cine, y el comentario que se podía hacer sobre la industria, lo cual no parece muy anticuado. Aunque aún tengo pendiente ver La Substancia, no me sorprende haber visto gente comparándolas. El miedo a envejecer, el miedo de no cumplir con los estándares de tu persona pública, y las consecuencias de todo eso que son muy sentidas por Margo es una temática que aún se siente relevante hoy. Los ingenios de Eve generan muchos momentos intrigantes. Y el diálogo es absolutamente memorable también. Amo.
ENG: At times it's a fascinating time capsule of the dynamics between theater and cinema and the commentary that could be made about the industry, which doesn't feel too dated at all. While I'm yet to see The Substance it doesn't surprise me to see a review comparing it to this one. The fear of aging, the fear of not living up to your public persona, and the aftermath of it all that is felt by Margo still feels too relevant today. The absolute wits of Eve make for many intriguing moments. Some unforgettable dialogue too. Luv it.
Persona 5 Tactica (2023)
ESP: Reseña pendiente. No me imaginé que me gustara tanto.
ENG: Pending review. I did not imagine I would like it so much.
Rose of Versailles (2025)
ESP: La gente asume que esto es un remake de la serie animada pero en realidad toma mucho más del manga y parece ser más leal a la historia original... A la vez que se apresura a contarla en el tiempo de duración que tiene. La adaptación en carne y hueso de 1979 también tiene este problema. La Rosa de Versalles es simplemente una historia muy grande para contar en menos de dos horas, incluso tres. Lo disfruté como lo que es, y para mí eso es el gusto de verlo en HD. Ver a estos personajes bajo lo que la animación puede hacer hoy. Hay referencias a líneas argumentales omitidas, para algunas no podés ni pestañear o te las perdés. No es la manera más completa de disfrutar la historia pero ¿Qué más da? Este podría ser el último gran proyecto mientras Riyoko Ikeda viva y lo celebro por eso.
ENG: People may assume that this is a remake of the anime series but it takes much more from the manga and might actually be more loyal to the actual story... While also speeding through it over the course of the runtime. The live action adaptation also had this problem, Rose of Versailles is just too big of a story to showcase in under two hours, under three even. I enjoyed it as what it is, and to me that's HD goodness. Seeing these characters under what animation can do today. The final scene made me tear up too. There are references to ommitted storylines, some of them blink and you'll miss them. It's not the most complete way to enjoy the story but what can you do. This might be the last big project for this franchise, at least during Riyoko Ikeda's lifetime, and I celebrate it despite everything.
