Bread of Happiness (2012)

ESP: Si viste la serie Midnight Diner en Netflix (O sus películas) encontrarás esta historia familiar, sólo que con un enfoque en la vida rural más que la urbana. O, si ya viste esta película y querés más de este concepto, Midnight Diner es tu solución. Dos horas de apreciar la belleza de lo mundano y darse cuenta de que todavía hay tiempo para volver a conectarse con la gente que te rodea. Hermosos paisajes capturados con cinematografía precisa y eficaz, nada muy loco. Y hay una oveja muy tierna.

ENG: If you watched a show like Midnight Diner (or its movies) you'll find familiarity with this story, if only with a focus on rural life rather than urban life. Or, if you watched this movie and want more of this concept, Midnight Diner is the way to go. Two hours of appreciating the beauty in the mundane and realizing that there is still time to reconnect with the people surrounding you. Beautiful scenery captured with precise and technically sound cinematography, nothing too out there. And a cute sheep.

I am what I am (2022)

ESP: Hay unas cuantas escenas memorables que capturan el estrés que una persona asexual arromántica puede enfrentar con cautivante realismo. El deseo de tener una amistad cuando la otra persona tiene intenciones distintas, las expectativas de la sociedad al respecto del matrimonio y el éxito en la vida; pero lo mejor del comentario en esta película es la versión de Cenicienta que crea Kasumi y lo diferente que reaccionan niños y adultos a ella. No se siente sermoneante, es una peli simple y mundana pero a la vez dice mucho entre líneas. Amé la cinematografía también.

ENG: There are a lot of memorable scenes that capture the struggle of an aromantic asexual person with striking realism. The longing for friendship when the other person has other intentions, society's expectations towards marriage as the realization of life; but the peak of commentary in this movie is Kasumi's retelling of Cinderella and how differently kids and adults reacted to it. It doesn't feel preachy, it's simple and low-stakes but simultaneously says a lot between lines. I loved the cinematography too.

My broken Mariko (2022)

ESP: Una historia desgarradora sobre una amiga que se tiene que enterar por las noticias que su mejor amiga se suicidó tras una vida de desgracias constantes. La primera escena ya duele, con la cara de consternación de nuestra protagonista, quien tiene que escuchar los comentarios de transeúntes ignorantes culpando a la víctima y diciendo que la adicción a las redes sociales tiene que ver. La realidad que vemos durante el resto de la película muestra otra cosa. A pesar de la trágica trama, el filme tiene momentos encantadores de los recuerdos de Shiino con Mariko que alivian el peso de la situación. Totalmente imperdible, y con un mensaje que al final del día sigue siendo esperanzador.

ENG: A heartbreaking story about a friend who has to learn through the news that her best friend committed suicide after a life of constant misfortune. The first scene already hurts enough, with the dreadful expression on our protagonist's face, who has to hear the comments of ignorant passers-by blaming the victim and alleging that social media addiction has something to do. The reality we see during the rest of the film shows something else. Despite the tragic plot, the movie has some warming moments in Shiino's memories of Mariko that add some relief to the situation. A total must-see, and with a message that's still hopeful at the end of the day.

It (1927)

ESP: Trato de concentrarme en el hecho de que hubo mucha gente involucrada en hacer de esta película un encanto, de los actores al equipo técnico pero todos hablan de la gran estrella y es imposible no prestarle más atención. Clara Bow se siente tan de la época pero simultáneamente parece una frescura de la época moderna con sus miradas atrapantes y gestos inolvidables. Se siente atemporal.

ENG: I try to keep my mind on the fact that there's so many people responsible for making this film as charming as it is, from the actors to the crew but everyone's talking about the big star and it's impossible not to pay attention to her the most. Clara Bow feels so from the era but at the same time fresh out of the modern age with striking facial expressions and unforgettable gestures. She feels timeless.

All about Eve (1950)

ESP: De a momentos es una fascinante cápsula del tiempo sobre la dinámica que había entre el mundo del teatro y el mundo del cine, y el comentario que se podía hacer sobre la industria, lo cual no parece muy anticuado. Aunque aún tengo pendiente ver La Substancia, no me sorprende haber visto gente comparándolas. El miedo a envejecer, el miedo de no cumplir con los estándares de tu persona pública, y las consecuencias de todo eso que son muy sentidas por Margo es una temática que aún se siente relevante hoy. Los ingenios de Eve generan muchos momentos intrigantes. Y el diálogo es absolutamente memorable también. Amo.

ENG: At times it's a fascinating time capsule of the dynamics between theater and cinema and the commentary that could be made about the industry, which doesn't feel too dated at all. While I'm yet to see The Substance it doesn't surprise me to see a review comparing it to this one. The fear of aging, the fear of not living up to your public persona, and the aftermath of it all that is felt by Margo still feels too relevant today. The absolute wits of Eve make for many intriguing moments. Some unforgettable dialogue too. Luv it.

Persona 5 Tactica (2023)

ESP: No me imaginé que me gustara tanto, y creo que en parte el estilo de arte es engañoso. Persona 5 Tactica es uno de esos spin-offs que no añade mucho al canon general de la serie, si es que realmente hay uno, pero no por eso es despreciable. Las caracterizaciones más caricaturizadas y coloridas esconden una trama bastante trágica tanto en su historia principal como en su DLC "Repaint Your Heart". La jugabilidad propone cosas interesantes que se alejan de los Persona tradicionales. Con un enfoque en tácticas por turno, la posibilidad de armar un equipo sin Joker en él, y que todos los personajes puedan usar múltiples Persona a elección, dándoles una habilidad de wild card a todos. Se siente como si el equipo detrás de este juego haya decidido experimentar conceptos nuevos (y clásicos) que se podrían aplicar a la serie en el futuro. Conseguilo en descuento, vale la pena jugarlo una vez.

ENG: I did not imagine I would like it so much, and I think that's the artstyle partly holding it back. Persona 5 Tactica is one of those spin-offs that don't add much to the general canon of the series, if there really is one, but that doesn't make it disposable. The cartoony and colorful aesthetic covers a pretty tragic plot both in its main story and its "Repaint Your Heart" DLC. The gameplay aspect adds some interesting concepts that stray away from traditional Persona games. With a focus on tactics per turn, the possibility of setting up a team without Joker in it, and the ability for every character to summon any Persona you want, sort of giving them the wild card. It feels as if the team behind this game decided to experiment with new (and classic) concepts that could be added to the series in the future. Get it on a discount, I think it's worth a playthrough.

Rose of Versailles (2025)

ESP: La gente asume que esto es un remake de la serie animada pero en realidad toma mucho más del manga y parece ser más leal a la historia original... A la vez que se apresura a contarla en el tiempo de duración que tiene. La adaptación en carne y hueso de 1979 también tiene este problema. La Rosa de Versalles es simplemente una historia muy grande para contar en menos de dos horas, incluso tres. Lo disfruté como lo que es, y para mí eso es el gusto de verlo en HD. Ver a estos personajes bajo lo que la animación puede hacer hoy. Hay referencias a líneas argumentales omitidas, para algunas no podés ni pestañear o te las perdés. No es la manera más completa de disfrutar la historia pero ¿Qué más da? Este podría ser el último gran proyecto mientras Riyoko Ikeda viva y lo celebro por eso.

ENG: People may assume that this is a remake of the anime series but it takes much more from the manga and might actually be more loyal to the actual story... While also speeding through it over the course of the runtime. The live action adaptation also had this problem, Rose of Versailles is just too big of a story to showcase in under two hours, under three even. I enjoyed it as what it is, and to me that's HD goodness. Seeing these characters under what animation can do today. The final scene made me tear up too. There are references to ommitted storylines, some of them blink and you'll miss them. It's not the most complete way to enjoy the story but what can you do. This might be the last big project for this franchise, at least during Riyoko Ikeda's lifetime, and I celebrate it despite everything.

Lazzaro Felice (2018)

ESP: Lazzaro me recuerda a un Cándido (Voltaire) aún más inocente. Pero en un mundo que sólo se volvió más cínico, explotador y frío. Sólo podemos adivinar qué le pasa realmente a cada personaje en lo que el filme se vuelve más y más simbólico con el paso del metraje. Hay una inquietud cómoda en sus elementos sobrenaturales mezclado con una hermosa y nostálgica cinematografía que me encanta. Como un sueño que no es sueño ni pesadilla. Pero estoy divagando. Los eventos reales en la película son sistemáticamente de pesadilla, y aún así esa gente logra reír a través de todo. Quizá para su infortunio. Nada cambia realmente al final.

Bueno, pensándolo mejor. Sí cambian, la gente que rodea a Lazzaro. Se vuelven gastados, estratégicos, más similares al mundo en el que se encuentran. Aún así Lazzaro se ve igual, su alma intacta, cristalina.

ENG: Lazzaro reminds me of an even more oblivious Candide (Voltaire). But in a world that only got even more cynical, exploitative and colder. We can only guess the implications of what really happened to each character as the film becomes more and more symbolic as it moves forward. There's a comfortable eeriness in its supernatural elements mixed with such beautiful and nostalgic cinematography that I love. Like a dream that isn't a dream nor a nightmare. But I digress. The actual events in the movie are systemically nightmarish, and yet, through it all, those guys manage to keep smiling. Maybe to their misfortune. Nothing really changes in the end.

Well, on a second thought. They do change, the people surrounding Lazzaro. They become ragged, cunning, more akin to the world they find themselves in. Yet Lazzaro remains the same, his soul untainted, pristine.

Jaganrei (1988)

ESP: Espero que la gente pueda verla sin ningún conocimiento previo. Cada descripción de esta película en internet arruina toda la sorpresa (La revelación ocurre como a los 27 minutos del tiempo total de 49). Es una hermosa historia de terror a lo "city pop" a fines de la época de la burbuja, así que a quienes les guste esa música y período histórico les podría gustar mucho esta ya que el terror y lo sangriento no es tan intenso. Encaja más como un filme de metraje encontrado inquietante que como terror puro, lo cual es bien mi estilo. Con lo que sabemos algo así podría haber pasado en la vida real, considerando la cantidad de idols que prueba suerte y fracasan quedando olvidadas por la historia en ese momento. La película hace un buen comentario sobre toda la industria, lo quiera o no.

Al parecer esta cinta es pionera en marcar los tropos que luego usarían muchas otras y lo creo totalmente. Cualquier en mi generación que disfrutó creepypastas de episodios perdidos se comería esta película con fritas también. Y es tan corta que me dejó con ganas de más en esta índole. Una construcción lenta pero constante hacia un clímax enorme.

ENG: I hope people are able to go fully blind into this one. Every description about the movie online kinda spoils the whole thing (The reveal happens like 27ish minutes into the 49 minute runtime). It's a beautiful tale of "city pop" horror in the late bubble era, so fans of that time period and music may enjoy this one too as the horror and gore is not that intense. Fits more as an unsettling found footage film rather than straight horror, which is right up my alley. For all we know something like this could've happened with the amount of idols trying it out and failing at the time. The movie does a nice commentary on the industry as a whole, whether it wants it or not.

Apparently this was a pioneer in setting up the tropes that many movies after would use, and I fully believe it. Anyone in my generation who enjoyed lost episode creepypastas would eat this up too! And it's so short it left me wanting more in this vein. A slow but constant build up for a huge climax.

Tetris (2023)

ESP: La idea de Minoru Arakawa y Howard Lincoln en una persecusión vehicular de alta velocidad me tuvo sonriendo como boluda. Amo la película sólo por eso.

La historia real obviamente no es tan emocionante y es incluso más complicada. Es una de mis curiosidades favoritas (Gracias Gaming Historian en YouTube), así que tengo opioniones encontradas sobre el filme; algo de la manera en la que presentan la URSS, el tiempo en pantalla de Alexey (¡Quería más!), el pixel art a lo loco. Pero me encantó el casting. Anthony Boyle es maravilloso como Kevin Maxwell. La banda sonora es bonita. Es una película divertida. Para ver en comodidad y sin pensar mucho, creo.

ENG: The idea of Minoru Arakawa and Howard Lincoln in a high speed car chase across Moscow had me cheesing. I have to love it just for that.

The real story is obviously not as exciting and even more complicated. It's one of my favorite rabbit holes (Thanks Gaming Historian on YouTube), so I have little mixed feelings about the movie; some of the framing of the USSR, Alexey's screentime (I wanted more!), the gimmicky pixel art. But I loved the casting. Anthony Boyle is wonderful as Kevin Maxwell. The score and soundtrack are neat. It's just a little fun movie. Comfort viewing, to me.

Quiz Show: El dilema (1994)

ESP: Hermosa película de principio a fin, incluyendo la brillante secuencia de créditos. Elenco excelente, diálogo inteligente, estética hermosamente precisa. Sentís y esperás a través de la película que la verdad prevalezca pero incluso después de que lo hace no es suficiente, gana el cinismo. La televisión nos atrapó.

ENG: Gorgeous movie from beginning to end, down to the brilliant credits roll. Excellent cast, smart dialogue, beautifully accurate aesthetics. You feel throughout the movie and hope that truth prevails but even after it does it's not enough, cynicism wins. Television got us.
